Unfiled tax returns

Catch-up filing

ScrubJay files every missing federal tax return you need, at a published price per year. We pull your IRS records with your approval, ask only for what’s missing, and a licensed preparer prepares and signs each return. Recent years are e-filed; older years go by certified mail, and we track each one until the IRS posts it.

What’s included

  • Your IRS records, pulled with your authorization: which years are missing, what the IRS has on file for each, and any balances, deadlines or collection activity.
  • A fixed price per missing year, shown in the app before you pay for anything beyond the $79 investigation.
  • One return per missing year, prepared and signed by a licensed, PTIN-holding preparer.
  • Filing: the current year and the two before it are e-filed; older years are printed and sent by certified mail with tracking.
  • Tracking until the IRS posts each return, with expected wait times on your case timeline.
  • Payment plan setup, once your returns post, at no extra charge.

How it works

  1. Free estimate. A few questions, a price range, and no phone number needed.
  2. $79 IRS investigation. You verify your identity, sign our engagement letter and consents, and approve our access in your IRS Online Account. We pull your records and give you a fixed price. The $79 counts toward your plan.
  3. Your to-do list. The app asks only for what the IRS records don’t already show, such as dependents or business expenses, and tells you why we need each item.
  4. Preparer review and your signature. A licensed preparer prepares and signs each return. You review and sign too.
  5. Filing and tracking. We file each return and watch your IRS account until it posts.

Who it’s for

  • You have one or more years of unfiled federal returns, especially three or more.
  • You’ve received IRS letters such as a CP59, CP518 or CP3219N.
  • You’re self-employed or did gig work and didn’t keep perfect records.
  • The IRS filed a substitute return for you and the balance looks too high.

Who it isn’t for

  • Everything’s filed and you owe $50,000 or less: you can probably set up a payment plan yourself. See when you don’t need us.
  • Business, partnership or payroll tax returns: we don’t prepare these yet.
  • A criminal investigation: talk to a tax attorney first.

Common questions

Which returns do you file?

Federal individual returns (Form 1040), including W-2 income, self-employment and gig income, retirement income and unemployment. Business returns, payroll tax returns and some complex returns are outside what we handle right now, and we’ll tell you up front.

Do you file state returns?

Not at this time. We explain how your state tax situation connects to your federal case and where to get help with it.

What if I don’t have my records?

We start with the income the IRS has on record for you, then ask targeted questions to fill the gaps. For self-employment, bank records can help rebuild expenses.

Do I have to talk to anyone?

Not unless you want to. You answer questions and upload documents in the app, and a preparer reaches out only when they need something only you can tell them.
