Which years can be e-filed
The IRS’s e-file system accepts the current tax year and the two prior years. In the 2026 filing season, that’s 2025, 2024 and 2023. A 2022 return or older has to go on paper.
How to file an older return
- Use that year’s forms and rules. Tax brackets, standard deductions and credits change every year.
- Sign and date it. If you’re married filing jointly, both spouses sign.
- Mail it to the right address: the one on your IRS notice if you have one, otherwise the address in that form’s instructions.
- Send it by certified mail with tracking, and keep a complete copy.
Why paper returns take longer
Paper returns are processed by hand. Returns with a balance due can sit longer, and posting to your account can take months. Certified mail gives you proof of when you sent each return, and you can check the IRS’s current processing times on IRS.gov.
How we handle it
We prepare each older year on its own year’s forms, a licensed preparer signs it, and we mail it by certified mail with tracking. Then we watch your IRS account until the return posts, and show the expected wait on your case timeline.
